There’s no doubt, Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places on earth. And the only way it will stay that way is if we, you and I, take care of it. There’s so many ways we can do this. One is to bring in your own reusable bags whenever you shop at Foodland. There are so many good reasons why you should do this. First, you get to show off how cool and environmentally conscious you are! Two, you protect our island (most important!) and three, you get either a 5¢ credit or 3 Hawaiian Miles for each reusable bag used at checkout. And in honor of Earth Month, Foodland will give DOUBLE CREDITS from March 27 – April 22, 2013. Yes, that’s 10¢ or 6 HawaiianMiles per reusable bag!

Also, the Coca-Cola® Company is partnering with Foodland to celebrate Earth Day. So, from now thru April 22, when you purchase any two (2) DASANI® 1L and/or HONEST TEA® 16.9 oz. bottles, along with using your Maika`i Card, you will receive a FREE Foodland reusable bag! This is a great way to get a reusable bag while staying hydrated on DASANI® or HONEST TEA®.

By the way, did you know that since 2007, when Foodland designed its first reusable bag, there have been a total of eleven designs? The Musubi Reusable Bag has been thus far the most popular. It’s no wonder since Hawaii folks consume the most SPAM per capita. Our new Potluck Reusable Bag is also a favorite for many customers. We hope you’ll join us this Earth Month, and use reusable bags to keep Hawaii beautiful!

With all the beautiful sunny weather we’ve had recently, our local lychee farmers have been sharing news that the sunny days have made for a good lychee season. We’ve worked with several Hawaii farms to bring you sweet and juicy lychee that is perfect to enjoy on these hot summer days.

Whether you like them served nice and cold, or even frozen, these sweet treats are both fragrant and refreshing. Peeling the unique shell off of these fruits is a little bit of a challenge, but the reward inside is well worth the wait.

All of us foodies that watch every Chef and Food show on the Food Network could not help but notice the new wine being talked about on the Food Network. Wente Winery and the Food Network have partnered together to craft a new wine called ENTWINE wine. The goal was to offer everyday wine for everyday people to enjoy with everyday food. No foo-foo fancy foods, and no wines that you need a second mortgage to purchase.

I love the back label of each wine that explains in everyday terms what foods would be best to pair with the wine. And these are FUN suggestions… like the back label of ENTWINE Pinot Grigio reads:
“Crisp, refreshing, and citrusy, like a green apple drizzled with lime juice and honey”

Wow, my cheeks are salivating just reading that! It goes on to suggest…
“Enjoy with salty cheese, guacamole, Asian takeout, tropical fruit, ham, white fish, hors d’oeuvres, and evenings on the porch.”

Ok, ok, so sub “Pupu’s” for hors d’oeuvres and “sunset on the beach” for the porch and … WOW, perfect advice for our Hawaii lifestyle. And when was the last time someone suggested what wine to pair with Guacamole! Holy moly, guacamole! If you want to try a nice cheese to pair with Pinot Grigio, my suggestion would be a nice cheddar from Wensleydale Creamery, or even a blue cheese.

I also really like the ENTWINE Merlot paired with a mild creamy cheese like Jarlsberg, as it really complements the summer plum and cherry tones of the Merlot grapes.

I’ve got to tell you that these wines definitely over-deliver for the price. They are really delicious wines meant to be enjoyed with food, family and friends. Take it from me, we guarantee you will love these wines!

Just in time for your Easter gathering… give these wines a try. Your guests will praise your wine-smarts, and you will come back for more….

Cheers!

Five generations of the Phillips family have worked the land and developed these beautiful wines, dating all the way back to the Civil War era. Michael and David Phillips are the brothers who now run the vineyards, develop the wines, design the labels and even write the poetry on the back label (read the Seven Deadly Zins back label for insight on how they related the Seven Sins from their Catholic school upbringing to the seven Old Vine Zinfandels blended in their wine.) Michael and David have developed a series of really fun, yet seriously delicious wines. Here are two of our favorites:

SEVEN DEADLY ZINS

A sinful blend indeed! This is the flagship Zinfandel from Michael David. The two Phillips brothers wanted to find and develop a blended Zin so captivating that nobody could resist it. In the end, Seven Old Vine Zinfandel vineyards were chosen for their superior fruit and when you taste it, you are rewarded with sweet raspberry pie notes, vanilla, blueberry, cinnamon, and black pepper. This is one rich, full-bodied, opulent, luscious Zinfandel! A journey thru Seven Delicious Delights, in a word, yummy!

PETITE PETIT

We loved this wine so much, that Keoni the Top Chef raved about it last month and we nearly sold out at some locations! Yes, it is hard to ignore the elephant in the room. Like elephants whose size is imposing, Petite Petit is large! Keoni loves it, and I would agree that it’s a joyous explosion of color and fun!

This is a full-bodied, whopper style of wine loaded with pure black fruit and vanilla flavors that coat the palate with purple pleasure. Plus, this is the perfect wine to enjoy with a big juicy hamburger! A summertime barbecue celebration of richness and flavor!

Michael David Winery is known for being innovative, making great wine and having fun. Invite these wines to your next party.

Look for them both on sale today and tomorrow at a really hot price!

Cheers!

Back in June, I introduced the locally grown Hamakua Mushrooms. You learned a little about the farm and the different mushrooms that are grown by Hamakua Mushrooms. We ran it on special so I’m sure a lot of you got to taste how delicious they are!

Even though I told you they are grown here in Hawaii (the packaging notates this too,) I feel there are still some of who can’t believe they are grown in Hawaii! So, I went to see for myself. Here are a few pictures I took to share with you.

For those of you who have yet to try them, they are on special again this week, so be sure to grab a package or two!
